Making sense of the noise: a new way to use threat intel

Summary
Global threat intelligence has huge potential, but many businesses struggle to use it effectively. The data is often too complex, too noisy, and too disconnected from their environment. DarkInvader’s upcoming Global Threat Intelligence modules aim to change that by curating only the most relevant information and cross-referencing it with the business’s own data. It helps security teams prioritise the right actions, without the burden of endless analysis.

Let’s be honest – most businesses like the idea of global threat intelligence far more than they like actually using it.

The concept is compelling. Tapping into a constant stream of information about emerging threats, exploited vulnerabilities, active threat groups, and global attack trends should give any security team the edge. But the reality is, it rarely works that smoothly in practice.

For starters, threat intelligence platforms can be complex to set up. It doesn’t matter if you’re paying a premium for a top-tier feed or using a more affordable service – the barrier is the same. Getting the data flowing is only half the battle. Making it useful is where the real challenge begins.

Because once it’s live, the volume of data can be overwhelming. We’re talking about millions of records. Alerts, indicators of compromise, CVEs, TTPs, sector alerts, APT group activity… it all comes in fast. Most businesses don’t have a dedicated team sitting there filtering through it all. So, much of it either gets ignored or takes up valuable time with little reward.

That’s the problem: the intelligence is there, but it isn’t easy to act on.

This is exactly the issue we’ve been working to solve with DarkInvader’s upcoming Global Threat Intelligence module. This new section is designed for organisations that want the benefits of threat intel but can’t justify the time or complexity required by traditional platforms.

Rather than dumping all the data on you and leaving you to work it out, our system brings in curated feeds from some of the top global threat intelligence providers. Then we filter and shape that data around what actually matters.

Think of things like the most exploited vulnerabilities in the past 30 days. Which threat groups have been most active. What sectors they are targeting. What techniques they are using. All that gets gathered, summarised, and matched against your estate.

So, if a threat feed highlights that CVE-2024-12345 is one of the most exploited vulnerabilities globally right now, and your vulnerability data shows you’ve got that exact CVE somewhere, we’ll flag it. That way, you’re not just seeing that you’ve got a vulnerability – you’re seeing it in the context of what’s being actively used by attackers.

The same goes for tracking threat groups. If a group shifts its focus and starts going after businesses in your industry, the platform highlights that. From there, you can check if your controls are aligned to defend against the methods they are known to use.

This isn’t a tool for threat hunters or cyber analysts. It’s not trying to replace an intelligence platform. Instead, it’s an entry point for businesses that haven’t yet been able to get real value from global threat intel.

In a world where attacks keep getting faster, smarter, and more coordinated, making informed decisions quickly is vital. But that only happens when intelligence becomes actionable. Our goal is to bridge that gap – not with noise, but with clarity.
